President Bush's State of the Union Address
(via www.washingtonpost.com)

Complete transcript of the State of the Union address. Mostly lies and empty rhetoric.

Here's an old classis: "On September the 11th, 2001, we found that problems originating in a failed and oppressive state 7,000 miles away could bring murder and destruction to our country."

Here's a new piece of insanity: "Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research: human cloning in all its forms; creating or implanting embryos for experiments; creating human-animal hybrids; and buying, selling or patenting human embryos."

Human-animal hybrids?

Science Friday: Thank Heaven, For Little Girls
(via brentrasmussen.com)

Wonderful essay about women and how men try to control them. The particular issue examined is the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine and its role in preventing Cervical Cancer.

(Short history. The vaccine prevents Cervical Cancer. It also prevents a sexually transmitted disease. The Christian Right opposes its use because preventing an STD might encourage folks to have sex.)

Debate Rages on Use of Cervical Cancer Vaccine
(via www.sfgate.com)

This gets a little crazy. There's this vaccine that pretty much prevents cervical cancer. Prevents. As in 100% effectiveness. Health officials want to give the vaccine to all kids, especially girls, as part of normal childhood vaccines. Makes sense, doesn't it.

But the Right opposes its use. Why? Because it also protects against a sexually-transmitted virus. And, to them, that would encourage sex. And preventing sex is more important that preventing cancer.

Yes, that's correct. They would rather women die of cervical cancer than be protected against a single STD and have pre-marital sex.

Bush Military Bird Flu Role Slammed

Dubya's been suggesting the use of military force against our own citizens if a avian flu epidemic happens.

Both sides hate the idea.
