What is this site all about?

pinkocommie.org is designed to be a persistent repository for resources applicable to the liberal community. There are so many blogs these days. And they're a valuable resource. But, after a few days, or even hours, posts drop off into archives, where they're effectively lost. pinkocommie tries to capture good resources and store them in a subject hierarchy so you can find them later. The sort of resources to which we link include:

The guiding questions is really "Will this resource be of use to someone a month later?" We're not really about cutting-edge news. We just want to be able to find it a couple weeks after it's no longer cutting-edge.

How do you decide whether to link to a blog post or to where the blog post points?

Generally speaking, we point to the original source to which the blog post pointed. However, if the blog posting contained good commentary, we'll point to the post. Also, if the original source requires some sort of registration and the blog post excerpts some juicy text, we'll point to the blog post. (We try to not point to sites that require registration.)

Why can't I link to individual posts?

Why would you? Point to the original source instead. Any commentary in a pinkocommie post is basically just a snarky comment. If we have something really worthwhile to say, we'll put it in a separate article and point to that article in a normal pinkocommie post.

How do sites get entered into pinkocommie.org?

Three ways:

  1. Users suggest sites. (Note the link to do so on the right on appropriate pages.)
  2. We see a cool link in a blog somewhere and add it.
  3. Someone here gets bored and decides to find a bunch of sites in some given topic area.

What do the choices on the "Filter and Sort Options" page mean?

Filters

PinkoCommie.org allows you to filter results based on the type of site in which you're interested. For example, if you're only interested in blogs, then you can filter the results so that you only see blogs. Or news sites. Or essays. Or whatever other choices are available. By default, PinkoCommie.org displays links to all types of sites.

Sort Order

PinkoCommie.org allows you to change the sort order of the results. There are five choices:

  1. Newest First: The most recently added links show up first. This is the default setting.
  2. Alphabetically: Results are ordered alphabetically.
  3. Batting Average (Hits/Views): Sites with the highest batting average show up first. The batting average is simply the number of times folks have actually visited the site via PinkoCommie.org divided by the number of times folks have seen the link to the site listed here.
  4. Number of Views: The sites that have been viewed the most show up first.
  5. Number of Hits (Click-Thoughs): The sites that have actually been visited via PinkoCommie.org show up first.

Sub-Categories

This selection controls how deeply into the category structure PinkoCommie.org goes for the results. The default setting is for PinkoCommie.org to just show links that are in the current category, ignoring links in lower sub-categories under the current category.

Changing this setting causes PinkoCommie.org to show all links anywhere under the current category, including links in lower sub-categories under the current category. Changing this setting does not put any real additional strain on PinkoCommie.org, but it can lead to very long lists of results.

Does PinkoCommie.org use cookies, and, if so, how long do they stay on the client computer?

PinkoCommie.org uses cookies to save your "Filter and Sort Options" settings if you have changed them from the default. These are the only cookies PinkoCommie.org uses. The cookies last only as long as your session lasts. If you close your browser, the cookies expire. We don't believe in persistently storing information on your computer without a damn good reason.

What information does PinkoCommie.org track about visitors?

If you add a link or category to the site, we track the IP address you used. We only use it in case someone attacks the site by adding large numbers of inappropriate links or categories. Then we can inform their ISP. Our web host also logs IP addresses of all visitors, as do virtually all web site hosts.

Where should I send my poorly spelled ungrammatical Republican hate mail?

Send all poorly spelled ungrammatical Republican hate mail to Comrade Tom. Please note that if you make threats that violate the law, we will take legal action. (Some of us actually are real live lawyers.) Also, we reserve the right to post any particularly amusing messages sent our way. But you shouldn't view that as a goal.

What blogging software does pinkocommie.org use?

It's custom-written. We're geeks as well as pinkos and lawyers.

Are you really communists?

No, not really. But it sure is a way cool domain name, isn't it?

Are you really pinkos?

Being guilt-ridden white folks, we do indeed turn pink given a moderate amount of sun.

Coffee or tea?

Tea, duh. Preferably over-priced organic green tea. What part of "cultural elite" do you not get?

You're not being serious anymore, are you?

No. Good catch.
